Building Connections between Community and Wildlife

Our project Building Connections between Community and Wildlife is supported by the WIRES National Grant Program.

Building Connections between Community and Wildlife used digital resources and equipment to engage a wider section of the Ballarat region community in active appreciation, care and conservation of wildlife in the local area. The project includes community education initiatives that will allow BWRAC to recruit more volunteers and to train more wildlife rescuers and carers. Volunteers will learn to use digital equipment to monitor wildlife movement and to engage with other community members to support wildlife in care.

Our project seeks to address the three key areas of:

·       building awareness of how residents of the region can support local native wildlife

·       engaging more community members in activities to support and promote native wildlife and habitat conservation

·       providing education and training to increase the numbers of trained and licensed rescuers, transporters and carers to meet the growing need in the region.

Our hope is that increased awareness will see a reduction in the numbers of native wildlife that are injured or killed directly or indirectly, by both humans and domestic pets. We also aim to improve conditions for native wildlife through citizen science and habitat activities. Finally, an increased number of rescuers and carers will mean that more animals have the chance to be rehabilitated and returned to the wild after receiving care.
